The Americans at the Château de Cheverny: 1918 - 2018

From 1 October to 1 December 2018, the Château de Cheverny will commemorate the centenary of the end of the First World War, paying special tribute to the American soldiers who came to Europe to fight for freedom.

The war ends on 11 November 1918. Three days later, several battalions from the Signal Corps march past the Château de Cheverny in the presence of the two sons of the Marquis and Marquise de Vibraye, just back from the front. The depot for the Signal Corps’ troops (handling telephony, signalling, etc.) was at Cour-Cheverny, where the regiments trained before heading to the front.

It was in this context that in December 1918, the Marquise de Vibraye organised a lunch for American officers at the Château de Cheverny. Previously unpublished photographs and a film recently discovered in the American archives bear witness to these events: they will be presented to visitors to the Château de Cheverny during a temporary exhibition.

“This is a just and deserved tribute that shows the special ties between the Hurault de Vibraye family and America… It is illustrated by a diploma exhibited in a corridor of the Château, awarded to one of the family’s ancestors by the Society of the Cincinnati. This document attests to the commitment made by this Officer of the Crown to the Marquis de Lafayette in 1780 to help the United States win their independence. The Vibraye family is still represented in the Society of the Cincinnati to this day,” explains Charles-Antoine de Vibraye, the current owner of the Château de Cheverny. “It was also partly in memory of that alliance that America mobilised in 1917 to help France win the war and the words 'Lafayette, we are here' were pronounced.”
