EXHIBITION: THE CHÂTEAU DE CHEVERNY AT THE LIBERATION

The Château de Cheverny at the Liberation: as seen by Hans Haug, manager of the National Museums warehouse.

When the Second World War broke out, the Musées Nationaux (National Museums Service) organised the evacuation of its collections of works of art to southern France to keep them safe.

Thanks to its central location, the Château de Cheverny was one of the designated sites. In September 1939, precious works of art from the public collections were warehoused there and remained hidden there for 7 years, preventing the château from being opened to the public.

These chiefly came from the Louvre museum’s department of Near-Eastern, Greek and Roman antiquities, but also from the Musée Nissim de Camondo, from the Musée de Saint Germain en Laye and from the Musée de Cluny, including for example these ten tapestries from the Tapestry of David and Bathsheba.

Until the warehouse was closed down in 1946, it was managed by several senior civil servants in succession from the Heritage Department. Hans Haug, director of Strasbourg’s museums, was appointed to this post in June 1941.

He was a museums man but also an artist. From his time at the Château, he left us several superb drawings of the estate and its architecture.

He was a key witness to this turbulent period in the life of Cheverny and played a decisive role in protecting the Château during the German withdrawal in August 1944.

The exhibition organised at the Château de Cheverny this Summer invites the visitor to experience the scene in Hans Haug’s office on 6 September 1944, a few days after the Liberation, just after he had written to his superiors relating the dramatic events of the last few days.
